Henry Taylor captures the breadth of Black life in America through raw, loosely rendered portraits of relatives, friends, celebrities, and live sitters. Drawing on his years working as a psychiatric technician, Taylor approaches his subjects with a profound sense of empathy, documenting inequality, family, and community as intimate contemporary landscapes. His expressive style bridges influences from Jacob Lawrence and Alice Neel to Depression-era photography and his native Los Angeles.

Exhibited internationally from London and Paris to Tokyo and Zürich, Taylor is a blue-chip artist represented by world-renowned galleries. His work is held in major permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), MOCA Los Angeles, the Hammer Museum, and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
