ARMADILLO RUGS

Rugs that lie lightly on this earth. In the early days of SOBU, we fell madly in love with Sydney-based Armadillo Rugs and knew we wanted to add them to our shop. In 2017, we visited their Melbourne showroom and saw how magnificent their entire line was in person. Their top-notch social and environmental practices sealed the deal.

Jodie Fried and Sally Pottharst created Armadillo in 2009. The line was born from their desire to combine aesthetics and ethics with clear focus on social and environmental responsibility. As the first American and Australian rug maker to achieve B Corp status, sustainability has been at the heart of Armadillo's business since the start. Armadillo products are 100% handmade, using Fair Trade practices with natural and sustainable fibers.

Every purchase provides employment and helps sustain an industry of ancient craftsmanship in India, supports education and local schools in their weavers’ villages, and aims to build a brighter future for children in underprivileged communities.

100% Handmade

Every Armadillo product is 100% handmade by an extended family of artisans using Fair Trade practices. Their artisans are integral to each of their local community’s livelihood and most importantly, they are carrying on a lineage that deserves preservation.

Natural & Sustainable

Armadillo's key values is environmental responsibility. They strive for their products and processes to leave as little impact on the earth as possible, while using a ‘reuse, reduce and recycle’ philosophy. They are continuously working to conserve resources and energy as they grow. The materials for their products are carefully sourced and they use natural, recycled and sustainable fibers.

Socially Responsible

Armadillo believes in giving back. They are passionately committed to social responsibility and community involvement. It is vitally important to their brand to support local schools in the weavers’ villages, as well as The Anganwadi Project’s preschools in underserved communities in India. Every purchase helps provide employment to their artisans, as well as education support to local schools in their villages.

They are ardent supporters and members of Care & Fair, an initiative against illegal child labour in the carpet production industry in India, Nepal and Pakistan. Absolutely no children are employed in the making of Armadillo products.
