WAYFINDERS / NEW WORK BY STEPHANIE DENNIS
Stephanie Dennis is an artist based in Oakland, California. Her abstract drawings and paintings investigate ideas about place, belonging, and family. She uses a range of materials in her art practice and employs expressionistic mark-making, line and shape to create structures that can be perceived as both sturdy and precarious, static and in motion, open and closed. These dualities mirror the bonds connecting us to each other and the places we call home.
She moved many times during her childhood and this experience of relocation drives her interest in architecting forms and instilling them with a sense place, memory, and vulnerability.
She received her MFA in Painting and Drawing at the University of Washington. She has shown her work in group shows and has taught drawing and painting at the University of California, Davis and the University of Washington in Seattle. She completed residencies at Vermont Studio Center and KALA Art Institute in Berkeley, CA.
